Strawberry Basil Rumtini

Happy Friday foodie friends!  Let’s get this weekend kickin’ with another cocktail courtesy of the hubs:

Welcome back, friends and welcome back FRIDAY!  I’m glad you all made it to the weekend so let’s kick it off with a new spin on an old classic.

To me, the martini is the quintessential cocktail.  It was a top favorite for the likes of Frank Sintara, Dean Martin, Humphrey Bogart, F. Scott Fitzgerald and of course, James Bond.  You’re in good company when you sip a martini, right?

Problem:  My beautiful wife is not fan of vodka or gin.  While the aforementioned may be good company, my wife is the BEST company.  I need a drink that gives a nod to the classic but also gets the nod of approval from my love.

Solution:  concoct a Rumtini.  Tina loves rum based drinks so this is a good first step.  Let’s take it one step further and flavor it with light, fresh, simple ingredients that make every sip more refreshing than the last.

With spring in full swing, strawberries are always on sale (and always in our fridge) and our basil plant is huge; what a perfect combination.  With a complete flavor profile and an eager wife, I started mixing.This drink is outstanding; super chilled, super fresh and super easy to drink.  Do yourself a favor.  Put on some big band music, shake one up and CHEERS to the weekend.

Strawberry Basil Rumtini


3 to 4 strawberries (caps removed and halved)
3 large fresh basil leaves
3 oz white rum (Bacardi is just fine)
1 ½ oz lime juice
1 oz simple syrup
1 cup crushed ice


Place strawberries into cocktail shaker and muddle to a puree. Add in basil leaves and muddle into strawberry puree.

Add rum, lime juice and simple syrup. Add ice, cover shaker with lid and shake for 15 seconds and then allow to rest for another 10 seconds. Pour into martini glass.

Side note: I used crushed ice to act as a little filter bed in hopes of catching the strawberry and basil puree. However, a few of those little bits of goodness still found their way into the glass, resulting in a “dirty” rumtini (think groove style orange juice). For a cleaner and more refined cocktail, place a fine strainer over the martini glass and pour through.
