Homemade Vanilla Extract: How To

I finally did it – I made (well technically I’m STILL currently making) homemade vanilla extract! SUPER easy. Vodka and Vanilla Beans + Time… Throw it all in an airtight jar/bottle and 8-10 weeks later you’ve got yourself some VANILLA EXTRACT! Holla!!!

If this Vanilla Extract turns out as fabulously as all the hype… this will be a super cute Christmas gift idea for this coming year!! (Check out these adorable bottles/labels: Sprinkles of Parsley)! I’m obsessed…

FYI: Costco sells Vanilla Beans in bulk – I think I got 16 for $12.99 (A STEAL of a deal!!).  At Publix it’s about 8 dollars for ONE – yes, ONE Vanilla Bean – INSANE.

Homemade Vanilla Extract: How To

Ingredients:

An airtight glass bottle (or mason jar)
A high-proof alcohol: Vodka, Bourbon or Rum (80 proof) - I used Vodka
Three vanilla beans per 1 cup (8oz) of alcohol

Directions:

Sanitize jars (I ran mine through the dishwasher). Using a sharp paring knife, split the vanilla beans lengthwise (down the center of the beans) and then cut in half (if necessary) to fit into bottle/jar. Cover vanilla beans completely with alcohol. Tightly cover the jar and give it a good shake. Store in a cool, dark place for 8-10 weeks. (Give the bottle a good shake every week or so!)
