BlogHer Food 2013: Austin, TX

There is NOTHING more fun than getting together with a bunch of other Food Bloggers for a weekend of networking and… EATING! This year, the lovely people of Pretzel Crisps sponsored myself, Jess, and Lauren to all go out there!

And can I just say… WHAT a weekend. I’m officially in love with Texas. Ya’ll know I LOVE my spice & in Texas there is NO shortage of that!

Just be forewarned that if a Texan tells you something is “not that spicy”, it’s probably, in fact actually quite spicy! Thankfully for me, I’m okay with that! πŸ˜‰

So I flew into Austin around the same time Jess arrived and we picked up our rental car and made a beeline for Torchy’s Tacos! We were HUNGRY after our flight (peanuts on the plane don’t exactly cut it for “lunch”).

I got the Jerk Chicken taco (which was burn your face off spicy) & the fried Avocado Taco (which was OUT. OF. THIS. WORLD. good!)… Jess & I also split some of their incredible queso. By “split” I mean I devoured my weight in queso & Jess had a couple bites! lol I LOVE me some good spicy queso!!! I’d definitely go back for the avocado taco & the queso! I also heard that the fried cookie dough was amazing (I’m kicking myself for not trying it!!!).

We then hit up a spa event and then quickly checked into out fabulous hotel at the Omni Austin (review coming next week)… then it was back to the airport to pick up Lauren & Baby Blake! We got Lauren checked into here hotel room and then met up to put together our Pretzel Crisps SWAG BAGS for the weekend! We may have gotten a bit distracted by posing poor baby Blake in a pile of Pretzel Crisps bags! lol

I mean, come on, look at the cuteness!

I almost kidnapped that baby and brought him home with me! haha SO. CUTE.

Later that evening we grabbed a late bite to eat at an infamous Austin Taco Truck: Chi’LantroΒ (think Korean BBQ meets Mexican Food – absolutely incredible)

Jess & I split the Kimchi fries:

They are known for these and we now know why! Quite possible the best thing we ate in Texas… I’m dreaming of going back for these! Gah… why don’t we have a Korean-Mexican food truck?!!!

Some other highlights from the weekend were: Gourdough’s Doughnuts

My personal favorite was the “Clucker” – spicy fried chicken & honey butter syrup on a fresh hot donut (unbelievably tasty!). Move over chicken & waffles… this is the new definition of Salty-Sweet perfection!

{Beauty shot courtesy of Jess}

And just so you all know what it actually looks like “behind the scenes” when food bloggers all get together to eat… iphones & Cameras galore! hah

Another highlight of the weekend was the brunch we had another day at South Congress Cafe:

I got the Migas and they were phenomenal! Next to the Kimchi fries… this was the next favorite thing I ate in Austin! Eggs scrambled with cheeses, jalapenos, tomatoes, and torn up corn tortillas. They served it was a side of refried black beans and hot fresh made flour tortillas. You spread a little black bean in the tortilla, add a scoop of egg, roll it up like a taco and scarf it down because it’s SO good!

They also served most of their dishes with these amazing gouda potato pancakes… I have GOT to figure out how to make those at home! SO. GOOD.

Oh & this weekend I have a new found obsession with photo booth photos…Β and I’ve also noticed than when told to make a goofy face, my default pose is mouth wide open – such a dork! πŸ˜‰

This pretty much sums up the weekend of silliness haha (I LOVE all these ladies!!! xoxo)

Oh and since we have all shared lots of photos with Pretzel Crisps in them over the weekend… we thought is was only fair to give three {3} lucky winners some of the swag we were giving out to the attendees! ENTER BELOW through the widget!

    Laura — June 12, 2013 @ 11:54 pm

I used to live four hours from Austin and always looked for excuses to travel there for some Torchy’s. This brought back fond memories and is killing me since I’m currently stuck overseas on military duty.
Next time look up Coolhaus. I guarantee you won’t find a better ice cream sandwich anywhere. The Whip In market stocks them in their freezer case. (Whip In is another must try. Just don’t let the exterior turn you away–it is a real gem.)
Now I really do need to move back to the Hill Country!

  32. 32

    Adrienne — June 13, 2013 @ 12:25 am

Don’t you just love ATX?! We moved from there to Southern California a couple of years ago, and still dream about all of the places you just named! Can’t go wrong with Torchy’s queso or ANYTHING at Gordough’s (though I hear it has a store front now–no more trailer!). Looks like you guys had a great time! Thanks for sharing!

PS–You’re so right πŸ™‚ “Not that spicy” is about an 8 to a Texan πŸ˜‰
